A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Major Initiative of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
