Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these treatments must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural management.
