Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
